Indonesia Open: PV Sindhu marches into second round

Jakarta: Rio-Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu kicked off her campaign at the Indonesia Super Series Premier event with a straight-games victory over Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women's singles event on Tuesday.

The fourth-seed produced a rich vein of form to register a 21-12, 21-19 win over Chochuwong in a one-sided opening round contest that lasted just 33 minutes.

Sindhu will now lock horns with Beiwen Zhang of United States in the second round.

Earlier, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal came out with a splendid performance as she bounced back from a game down to register a 17-21, 21-18, 21-12 win over Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon in a gruelling contest that lasted for 57 minutes.

Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles event, the Indian pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa knocked out of the tournament after suffering a straight games defeat at the hand of Indonesian duo of Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini.

The Indian pair was defeated by 12-21, 9-21 in a clash that lasted for just 29 minutes.
