Birmingham: Team India proved their detractors wrong as they got the better of England on day one of the opening Test at Edgbaston.

The hosts looked like they were on course for more runs but a sensational Joe Root run out by Virat Kohli changed the course of the day and wickets kept tumbling for the number ranked side who ended the day at 285-9 with James Anderson and Sam Curran at the crease.

However, in the middle of all action, India head coach Ravi Shastri was spotted on cameras taking a short nap just shortly after the tea session by none other than Harbhajan Singh, who was part of the commentary panel.

The Indian off-spinner was in conversation with assistant coach Sanjay Bangar via a connected earpiece, who was seated beside Shastri and said: “Ravi Shastri having a nap there. Wake up, Ravi. Sanjay, can you convey my message to Ravi?”

Harbhajan’s fellow commentators burst into laughter and also did Bangar, who later passed on the earpiece to Shastri.

Shastri later signalled that he was in a state of meditation after a heavy lunch and gave a thumbs up to the Jalandhar bowler.
