Mumbai: Rohit Sharma, the middle-order batsman failed to make the Indian squad for the five match Test series against England.

The batsman has been ruled out due to an injury suffered during the fifth ODI against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam. The thigh injury could keep the batsman out for six to eight weeks.

The news of Rohit’s injury was revealed by the chief selector MSK Prasad during the announcement of the squad for the first two Tests against England.

"Unfortunately we have all seen on TV that Rohit Sharma is badly injured. And there is scope of surgical intervention, there is a chance (that) he is going to be assessed in England. In case it is required he might have to undergo a surgery," said Prasad.

"(We are) definitely not (considering) him for the Test series. In case he does not require a surgical intervention, then 6-8 weeks (for recovery) and if it (surgery) is required then it could be more."

Sharma, one of the standout performers in the Test series against New Zealand, scored 238 runs at an average of 79.33. Rohit also scored three fifties against the Kiwis in as many Tests.

India begin Tests against England in Rajkot on November 9.
