Indore: Mumbai Indians (MI ) skipper Rohit Sharma had an extra reason to celebrate his team’s six-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) here on Friday.

Rohit, who scored 24 runs off 15 balls, became the first Indian cricketer to hit 300 sixes or more across the Twenty20 format.

While he has smashed 183 sixes in the IPL overall, he has 78 sixes to his name in international cricket. The rest of his sixes have been struck in other domest tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and the now-defunct Champions League T20.

Currently, Chris Gayle not only holds the record for maximum sixes in T20s (844), but also he holds the record for the same in terms of the IPL tournament (290) . 31-year-old Rohit is just behind him (183), slightly ahead of MS Dhoni (180) and Suresh Raina (180).

The right-handed Mumbai batsman also created another unique record. His unbeaten 24 against KXIP was the 17th such instance when he remained so. Interestingly, he has ended up on the winning side on all 17 occasions, a record which was previously held by Gautam Gambhir (16).

MI, who are currently placed fifth with six points in the IPL, will next host third-placed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
