One blood, two contrasting fortunes: Jasprit Bumrah's grandad lives in poverty at 84
While Bumrah is making waves in the global cricketing scene, his estranged grandfather is living a difficult life.
New Delhi: Jasprit Bumrah has undoubtedly cemented his reputation as one of the best bowlers in the world and is on a high, making waves in international cricket. While India’s death over specialist continues to enjoy success and fame, Bumrah’s grandfather, Santokh Singh Bumrah is struggling to make ends meet.
Santok, who is now 84-years-old, currently resides in Uddham Singh Nagar of Uttarakhand. He has been making a living by driving a tempo since he moved there from Ahmedabad, and as he continues watching his grandson rise to fame in the global cricket scenario, Santok wishes to meet his Hardik again after a gap of 17 long years.
“It feels great to see Jasprit on television screen performing so well in international matches. I pray to God for his success and meet him once before I die,” Santok said to Hindustan Times.
Jasprit Bumrah’s grandfather enjoyed success as a businessman during the 80s and the 90s in Gujrat, having owned three factories. Santok who was assisted by Jasprit’s father, Jasbir in the business said that fortunes took a turn after the death of his son.
“After Jasbir’s death in 2001, the fate turned and I started running into losses. Sold out factories and shifted to Kiccha with my brothers,” Santokh added.
Santok soon shifted to Kiccha and purchased an auto to earn his bread and butter. And now, after all these years, Santok lives in a sorry state of affairs with his other son.
When asked about what separated him from his beloved grandson, Santok did not say much but mentioned about the bitter relationship with his daughter-in-law.
“Jasprit’s mother was not willing to see us. Recently my daughter visited Ahmedabad. I tried hard to get Jasprit’s contact but couldn’t. I would be grateful if you could please help,” he added.
It is learnt that Jasprit was brought up by his mother since childhood in Gujarat and began his cricket adventure from there. The youngster was soon racked up by the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he impressed straight away and was rewarded with an Indian call-up. Since then, there has been no looking back for the fast bowler.
Jasprit’s uncle, Jaswinder Singh stated that the family intends on reuniting as they look forward to meeting India’s death-over specialist soon.
