Bengaluru: If Ravichandran Ashwin looks a little jaded so far in the first two matches of the four-Test series between India and Australia, it is for a good reason. Even on an average day on the field, the Chennai-born tweaker managed to overtake India coach and former spinner Anil Kumble, to set a world record.

Till Sunday, Kumble held the record of having bowled the bost number of deliveries (3,673) in a season – 2004/05.

However, Ashwin overtook his coach to bowl the most number of deliveries in a season, in Test cricket, as he put in a shift of 49 overs in Australia’s second innings in the Bengaluru Test.

While Kumble bowled his 3,673 deliveries in 22 innings, Ashwin managed to achieve this feat at a much faster rate of 21 innings, at 29.2 over per innings.

Most balls bowled in a season in Test cricket:

Ravichandran Ashwin – 3,749 in 21 innings in 2016/17
Anil Kumble – 3,673 in 22 innings in 2004/05
Vinoo Mankad – 3,662 in 15 innings in 1952/53
