Batting for the giants
With the home team out of the game, city folk are now geared to support other teams in the ongoing IPL.
Breaking the hearts of scores of diehard fans from the city, our ‘Bold’ RCB boys will not be running into to the field with the #PlayBold anthem reverberating across Chinnaswamy Stadium when the Eliminator and the second qualifier of IPL 10 will be played in the city later this month.
Virat’s brigade has not had the best of IPL seasons this year. With just five points from 12 games and with only two more matches to go, RCB are out of contention for the title.
With the home team not in the fray anymore, many RCB fans from the city may be faced with a very unusual predicament – who will they support during the final leg of the tournament? We reached out to a few fans to find out who their support is with.
A long time RCB fan and an entertainer based in Bengaluru, Shekar Vijayan, said that he will support the Sunrisers Hyderabad now as he believes that they can go all the way. When asked why, “They have a very strong bowling unit and have an exciting variety of players. Additionally, Yuvraj Singh’s batting is like Shiva doing the Tandav when he goes after the bowlers,” he points out.
Captain Cool MS Dhoni seems to be the natural choice for some fans now. Another distraught RCB fan, Kaveri Adiga, a student pursuing her masters at St.Joseph’s College says, “I’ve been a fan of RPS (Rising Pune Supergiant) apart from RCB because of me being a huge fan of MS Dhoni. And the team in itself has been performing well throughout this season. I am looking forward to watching them in the playoffs. RCB has been disappointing this season. Very disappointing to watch as a RCB fan but nevertheless will be supporting them forever!”
Admitting that his heart sank with every match RCB lost, Ajay S M , an operations manager with Amazon, put his weight behind Rising Pune Supergiants. “I would support Pune now because I am a die-hard MS Dhoni fan. The man is an icon both on and off the field. And also his stay-calm attitude is just commendable. He has so much to offer to youngsters who take success to their head and loss to their hearts. Although M S Dhoni’s performance is not breathtaking this season, the man’s mere presence in the field will steer the team to victory,” he says.
The anxious wait to see the Bengaluru lads lift the cup continues. Perhaps, IPL 11 will be theirs to win? Fingers crossed.
