Judgement day: BCCI top brass' fate rests on SC ruling
The BCCI, who has Kapil Sibal as their council, argued that it would not be possible to provide an undertaking in the span of just one day.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has come down hard on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), asking the board to fall in line with the recommendations made by the Lodha panel.
However, as the BCCI have already declined to provide an undertaking that they would comply with the SC appointed panel’s recommendations, the apex court has said that it would give a ruling on the board, on Friday.
The BCCI, who has Kapil Sibal as their council, argued that it would not be possible to provide an undertaking in the span of just one day.
The SC had originally given BCCI a deadline of September 30 to fall in line with the Lodha recommendations. However, the board failed to meet the deadline, and even went on to disregard some of the crucial points put forward by the Lodha panel, after a Special General Meeting (SGM) on October 1.
The re-election of Ajay Shirke as the board secretary, and the appointment of a five-member selection panel are a couple of points, which have turned out to be a bone of contention between the two parties.
According to the Lodha recommendations, BCCI was asked to do away with the current policy for the appointment of their five-member national selection panel.
The recommendations asked BCCI to appoint only three selectors. Also, the board was advised to do away with the zonal selectors system in the men’s, women’s and the junior teams.
Frustrated with the BCCI's constant defiance, the Lodha panel also suggested that the entire top brass of the board be replaced by independent administrators, in order to facilitate the reforms.
