Here's what happened during the first India versus Australia Twenty20 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.
Ranchi: The local lad MS Dhoni did not get a chance to hit some big blows in his homeland as India took on Australia in the first Twenty20. However, the former Indian cricket team captain created quite a buzz as Virat Kohli’s men beat David Warner and co to take 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series.
While he missed out on a tough stumping chance off Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling, his epic reaction after Kohli ran out Daniel Christian.
The said incident happened on the first ball of the eighteenth over of the Australian innings. While the Australian all-rounder failed to connect the ball as he intended, the ball had travelled towards long-on. With Australia desperate for runs, Christian and Andrew Tye decided to go for the second run, taking on Kohli’s arm.
However, the Indian skipper, who was manning the long-on region was quick to get onto the ball and targetted the stumps at the striker’s end. Considering, the throw was coming in from the deep, Dhoni was quick to move near the stumps to collect the throw and disturb the furniture to catch Christian short of his ground.
However, Kohli’s direct-hit meant that Dhoni did not have to do anything as Christian was caught napping.
While Sunil Gavaskar, who was commentating then, initially praised Dhoni’s glovework the replays went onto show that it was a direct-hit. The on-field umpires brought the third-umpire into play. However, that did not help Christian’s fortunes as Kohli had the last laugh. And Dhoni, meanwhile, could not hold back his amusement as India celebrated another Australian wicket.
