IND vs SL, 1st ODI: Suranga Lakmal guides Lanka to 7-wicket win in Dharmsala ODI
Score after 20.4 overs, SL 114-3: Niroshan Dickwella 26*, Angelo Mathews 25*; Jasprit Bumrah (1/32)
Dharamsala: Sri Lanka claimed their first win of the India tour by beating India in by 7 wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday.
Opting to bowl first, the Sri Lanka pacer attack ripped apart the Indian batting order with aplomb. It was Suranga Lakmal who spearheaded the bowling attack claiming 4 wickets while Nuwan Pradeep also claimed 3 wickets.
Reeling at 29/7, hopes were restored after MS Dhoni stuck a gritty knock despite losing partners at the other end.
In reply, the hosts gave the Lankan's an early scare with the scorecard reading 19-2. However, Upul Tharanga soon turned the game on it's head with a fine knock, missing out on a half-century by one run. Niroshan Dickwella and Angelo Matthews then steered the chase and took the team over the line.
Sri Lanka 114-3 after 20.4 overs:
Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have kept the hopes of a miraculous win alive by dismissing Gunathilaka and Lahiru Thirimanne early after India were bundled out for 112 here on Sunday. Angelo Mathews has joined Upul Tharanga in the middle.
Sri Lanka 65/3 after 12.3 overs:
WICKET! Hardik gets the big fish. Bowls a good length delivery, driving the batsman forward for the drive. Dhawan takes a easy one behind the wickets.
Sri Lanka 19/2 from 7 overs:
WICKET! Chopped on! Bhuvneshwar Kumar removes Thirimanne. That was close to be called a no-ball. Fortunately, it was not. If it was though, it would have been twice in space of couple of balls when India would have lost out on a wicket; first being Bumrah's no-ball.
Sri Lanka 7/1 after 4 overs:
WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah has struck in his second over. Gunathilaka was trying to play too many shots and that has done him in. Edges one straight to MS Dhoni. Sri Lanka 1 down.
India innings:
While MS Dhoni (65) tried to push India towards a respectable total, Sri Lanka managed to bundle out India for 112 after Suranga Lakmal (4/13) ran through the Indian top order in the first ODI at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday.
India were once reduced to 29/7 as Sri Lankan pacers – Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep (2/37) and Angelo Mathews (1/8) broke India’s back in the series opener.
Kuldeep Yadav stitched a 41-run partnership with Dhoni as India escaped the horror of their lowest-ever score in ODIs against Sri Lanka. But just when Kuldeep looked good to go on, he was out stumped off Akila Dananjaya’s bowling.
While Dhoni, who notched up a fine half-century, managed to push India past 100-run mark by smartly rotating the strike when Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal batted, with his dismissal, India were all out for 112 in 38.2 overs.
India 98/9 from 36 overs:
FIFTY! What a fine knock this is from MS Dhoni! Came in to bat when India were 4 down for 16 and still in the middle, doing as much as he can to push India past 100. The entire dressing room stands and applauds this effort. Champion cricketer he is.
India 87/9 from 35 overs:
WICKET! Jasprit Bumrah's patience has run out. He dances down the track and misses a straight delivery as it sneaks through his bat and pad to disturb the timber. Dhoni is not at all pleased with this. India 9 down for 87.
India 70/8 after 26 overs:
WICKET! Akila Dananjaya has broken the MS Dhoni-Kuldeep Yadav partnership as Kuldeep could not drag his foot back inside the crease. India 8 down.
India 50/7 from 23 overs:
A loud cheer from the crowd as India reach 50-run mark. India still in all sorts of trouble but MS Dhoni and Kuldeep Yadav are trying to restore some pride.
India 29/7 from 17 overs:
WICKET! Lakmal has one more as Bhuvneshwar Kumar gets out caught. India 7 down for 29. 6 runs away from a lowest-ever total in ODIs.
India 28/6 from 16 overs:
WICKET! Make that six! Hardik Pandya has lasted for 10 balls. He was tentative in his shot-making and that has cost India a wicket. Edge and Mathews has taken an easy catch in the slips.
India 16/5 from 13.2 overs:
WICKET! Chopped on! Nuwan Pradeep has a wicket against his name as he removes Shreyas Iyer. India have lost half of their side for less than 20 in less than 15 overs.
India 16/4 from 13 overs:
WICKET! It's raining wickets in Dharamsala. Suranga Lakmal has now sent Manish Pandey packing. Pandey edges one to Dickwella. India are in a deep hole as MS Dhoni walks out to bat.
India 8/3 from 9 overs:
WICKET! Number 2 for Lakmal. Dinesh Karthik's poke and chip and play and miss stay lasted for 18 balls without a run against his name. Lakmal's inswinger traps DK plumb in front. India three down as Sri Lanka have been absolute misers with the ball. Just 8 runs from first nine overs and three wickets.
India 2/2 from 4.1 overs:
WICKET! Make it two! Sri Lanka have made early inroads. Suranga Lakmal has dismissed Rohit Sharma and India are in all sorts of trouble in Dharamsala. Two successful reviews in space of a few overs.
India 0/1 after 2 overs:
WICKET! What a start this is for Sri Lanka! Shikhar Dhawan is given out LBW on review. India are yet to get off the mark and they have already lost a wicket. Angelo Mathews has struck in his first over.

For the hosts, Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan will be the likely opening combination, and it remains to be seen if Ajinkya Rahane would get a game.
The big boost for the Indian side will be the return of Hardik Pandya, who returns to the side after being rested for the Tests.
For Sri Lanka, the captaincy responsibility will be passed on to Thisara Perera from Dinesh Chandimal. The biggest worry for the Islanders will be the absence of Dhananjaya de Silva, who will miss the opener due to illness and injury. Meanwhile, Asela Gunaratne, who injured his finger during the first Test could find a place in the playing XI.
