Captain Kohli, meanwhile, fell short of his fifty, having been dismissed for 45 runs by Jason Holder.
Holder finished at 2/45, whereas Shannon Gabriel (1/73) and Jomel Warrican (1/76) were the other wicket-takers.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul (four runs) and Cheteshwar Pujara (10) failed to make an impact as they were dismissed for low scores.
India 260/4 from 66 overs:
Rahane has slowly but surely finding his groove while Pant has gone about his business with some big hits as the two have brought up their fifties to push India past 250.
India 171/4 from 47 overs:
TEA! West Indies have done well to keep India in check after Shaw threatened to take the game away from them. Kohli's dismissal before tea also gives the visitors to have a crack at India's lower-order earlier than India would have liked.
India 162/4 from 43.5 overs:
WICKET! A big one! Kohli has opted for a review to challenge the on-field decision. But it was hitting the stumps. Jason Holder has given West Indies a big breakthrough. India 4 down.
India 102/3 from 20 overs:
EDGED AND GONE! Cheteshwar Pujara is dismissed for 10 runs as substitute Jahmar Hamilton takes a catch giving the wicket to Shannon Gabriel.
India 98/2 from 18.4 overs:
WICKET! A breakthrough West Indies were looking for! Prithvi Shaw departs as Jomel Warrican strikes. The ball was well tossed-up and Shaw could not connect as well as he would have hoped for and Hetmyer takes an easy catch.
India 80/1 from 16 overs:
LUNCH! India have scored at brisk pace, courtesy Prithvi Shaw, who is unbeaten on 52 off 42 balls, with eight fours and a six. West Indies have managed to scalp a wicket but otherwise they have been sloppy in the field.
India 61/1 from 8.4 overs:
WICKET! KL Rahul's struggle in the middle comes to an end. Jason Holder strikes. Rahul tries to leave the ball, then it hits the bat and drags back onto the stump. The indecision has cost him his wicket. Another missed opportunity!
India 61/0 from 8 overs:
India have raced past fifty in no time as Prithvi Shaw is tormenting the visitors who have been utterly sloppy with the ball and in the field. While KL Rahul has been watchful, the 18-year-old youngster has been on an absolute roll.
West Indies innings:
West Indies were done in by the Yadav show as Umesh Yadav scalped six and Kuldeep bagged three as India bowled out the visitors for 311 after Roston Chase's hundred.
West Indies, who resumed play on the overnight score of 295/7, added 16 more runs to their total as Umesh scalped all the three remaining wickets to complete his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
West Indies 311 all out from 101.4 overs:
WICKETS! Umesh Yadav has got two in two consecutive deliveries and will be on a hat-trick when West Indies come out to bat in the second innings. First, he removed Chase , disturbing the timber and then sent Shannon Gabriel packing on the next ball as Rishabh Pant took an easy catch.
West Indies 296/8 from 96 overs:
WICKET! Umesh strikes in the first over of the day. Devendra Bishoo departs.
While Roston Chase will be out to score a ton, Virat Kohli-led India will be eager to wrap up the West Indies quickly on Day two of the second Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal here on Saturday.
Although the West Indies crumbled yet again on Day 2, Chase and skipper Jason Holder’s resilience took the visitors closer to 300-run mark on Day 1 on Friday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors got off to a steady start before the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin spun a web around the opposition top order that saw them reeling at 113-5.
But it was Chase who revived the innings with a crucial 69-run stand with Shane Dowrich. Despite the departure of the latter thanks to Umesh Yadav, the lanky right-hander would go on to stitch an instrumental hundred partnership with Jason Holder to peg things back in their favour.
Just before the end of the final session, Umesh got rid of West Indies skipper holder who scored a gritty half-century. It’s clear the Caribbean side won’t throw in the towel easily and Virat Kohli and co will have to do much more as they eye a clean sweep.
