A new coach for women's cricket team
Former India opening batswoman, Gargi Banerjee, has sent in her CV to be considered for the post of women's cricket team coach.
According to the highly placed sources in the BCCI, she was the first Indian woman player to have applied for the post. Fifty five-year-old Banerjee has participated in two World Cups, played 12 Tests and 26 ODIs and has also served the women’s cricket in various capacities after her retirement. She has been a chairperson for the selection panel, served as a team manager and represented BCCI as its referee. She has completed Level A course and has coached the teams at the domestic level.
Challenging job
In the meantime, Herschelle Gibbs, the former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs, who too has tossed his hat into the ring believes that coaching India’s women team would be a great challenge.
“I had a look at some of the present Indian women players during World T-20. There’s nothing wrong with a different approach,” he added. However, Nooshin Al Khadeer, who happens to be Mithali Raj’s best friend believes that the woman team needs a female coach, if not as a head coach, at least as an assistant coach. Speaking exclusively, she said, “A woman cricketer should be involved in coaching. It will help the players to understand and communicate better.”
