Sachin quit captaincy due to Azharuddin, Kambli agrees
Former Indian southpaw is known for levelling allegations on Azhar during the famous 1996 World Cup semifinal match.
Mumbai: Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has making headlines recently primarily due to the release of his biopic —Azhar, that hit theatres on May 13. The flick that features Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi in the lead role depicts Azhar’s rise in Indian cricket, the captaincy of Indian team and his controversial involvement in the match-fixing scandal.

Azhar’s downfall occurred at the same time when Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar was making his rise to the role of captaincy. Sachin’s first stint as skipper was unsuccessful but he was again handed over the reins in the late 90s.

During India’s tour of Australia rumours had it that Azharuddin was making a comeback to the side after Team India’s disappointing performance. At the same time Sachin quit captaincy and reasons that floated around suggested Azhar was the reason behind the move.

According to a report in ABP Majha, it was speculated that Azhar was the reason behind Tendulkar’s decision to quit captaincy.
