Colombo: Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan has been roped in as Australia's spin bowling consultant ahead of the three- match Test series against the Island nation.

The 44-year-old, who is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 800 scalps, is expected to continue giving his valuable tips to Australian spinners until the start of the first Test in Pallekele on July 26.

"Murali's got a lot of experience in Sri Lanka," Australia captain Steven Smith was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.

"He took a truckload of wickets. It's great to have someone like that helping our spinners in this series - to give us that insight. He's been really good around the group so far, and he's enjoying his time with us."

This is the second time Muralitharan has joined forces with the Australian team. He had previously worked with Australia as a short-term consultant ahead of their Test series against Pakistan in the UAE two years ago.
