Watch: How Umpire Chris Gaffaney almost gave Cheteshwar Pujara out by mistake
Umpire Chris Gaffaney's dual decision on Cheteshwar Pujara left everybody completely flummoxed.
Ranchi: The decision review system (DRS) has been brought in to eliminate the human mistakes made by umpires.
Umpire Chris Gaffaney almost did something on the fourth day of the third Test between India and Australia in Ranchi, that restored faith in the review system.
Josh Hazlewood banged-in a bouncer in the first session of the day’s play on Sunday, while Cheteshwar Pujara was batting on 142.
Pujara, who attempted to play the hook shot, missed the ball completely, as it sailed into the hands of Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, as the fielders went up in appeal.
Gaffaney had seemingly started to raise his finger, when he suddenly realised the mistake he was about to make, and immediately switched his action to scratching his hat, leaving Aussie skipper Steve Smith completely flummoxed.
Former Australia batsman and current commentator Matthew Hayden rightly said that it was the perfect example of “how to give a batsman a heart attack”.
