Sri Lankan supporters heckle Indian female fans as Virat Kohli and co win 1st ODI
The Sri Lankan fans were left frustrated as their side bowed out to yet another humiliating defeated.
Dambulla: Four women fans from India faced the wrath from a rowdy bunch of Sri Lankan supporters during the 1st ODI match between Team India and Sri Lanka at the Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday. With the Lankans proving no match for Virat Kohli’s men, the Sri Lankan supporters got annoyed each time the Indian fans cheered for the Men in Blue.
However, what initially proved to be a friendly banter between the fans of the two teams, turned ugly as the Indian women supporters hit back at the verbal chants from the other side.
Before the second innings kicked-off, some of the Sri Lankan supporters tried to get under the skin of the Indians before the Sri Lankan policemen took charge of the matter.
With frustrations taking the toll on Sri Lankan fans after Upul Tharanga’s side bowed out to another humiliating loss, the Sri Lankan supporters crowded the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) office and hit back at the board. The flames stoked further as the fans shouted at the team bus, even before the players boarded it.
Once again, the Sri Lankan police came to the rescue, this time with batons and riot shields as the players safely made their way back to the team hotel.
"You get frustrated. Am I angry with the players? Absolutely not. The players work as hard as anyone can ask of them. They've been superb. Support staff have been out of this world. Brilliant. They work endless hours with planning and helping the boys. You can't fault anyone within that changing room," Sri Lanka's Interim Coach Nic Pothas said in a press conference as the supporters made their frustration known.
