Earlier, the hosts lost a flurry of wickets, including that of Joe Root, who fell for an unlucky 13.
Centurion Jos Buttler (106 runs) and Ben Stokes (62 runs) also looked dangerous, but were successfully seen off.
During the day, Jasprit Bumrah picked up a five-wicket haul, which included the wicket of the maiden centurion.
However, Bumrah had a nightmarish moment when he accidentally bowled a no-ball to Adil Rashid with the latter batting at two runs in a delivery that was supposed to be a wicket.
Despite that, he comfortably got his fifth wicket by removing Stuart Broad for 20 runs.

Preview:
Its advantage India as Virat Kohli and co aim to scalp their first win of the five-match Test series on Day 4 of the second contest in Trent Bridge.
The visitors, earlier declared at 352 for seven on the previous day thanks to India skipper Virat Kohli (103) and Cheteshwar Pujara (76) leaving Joe Root’s men a mammoth target of 521 to chase.
The hosts could have their task cut short with the pitch having quickened up now and it remains to be seen how the batsmen cope with the Indian bowling as the scoreboard reads 23-0 with Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook.
England were skittled out for 161 in the second innings after Hardik Pandya’s stellar five-wicket haul. After an opening fifty stand, they soon lost nine wickets for only 74 runs and avoided the follow-on courtesy of mini-assault by Jos Buttler.
England will have to cope with another blow after Jonny Bairstow suffered a finger injury.
