Mumbai: Virat Kohli made his 200th ODI special as he scored his 31st ODI hundred and continued his record-breaking march to sail past Ricky Ponting’s record 30 ODI hundreds during the first India versus New Zealand ODI here at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

The Indian skipper is now second only to legendary Sachin Tendulkar (49) in the list of most ODI hundreds.

Kohli, who had equalled Ponting’s feat of 30 ODI tons in the fifth and final ODI against Sri Lanka earlier in September, now has 31st ODI hundreds in 200 ODIs in 192 innings; meaning on an average has a century every 6-plus innings. Kohli had come tantalisingly close to break Ponting’s record during the second India-Australia ODI at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in September. However, he fell short by eight runs after dragging a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery onto the stumps.

However, Kohli, who recently became fastest to score 15,000 ODI runs in 330 innings across formats, made sure he grabbed the opportunity with both hands to help India put up a healthy total on the board.
