Playing Test matches without spectators can significantly alter the atmosphere for both players and fans, according to the two former cricketers, Iqbal Qasim and Mohammad Ashraful, each from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, scheduled from 30 August to 3 September will be played without spectators at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. This decision was made due to significant construction work in preparation for the Pakistan-hosted ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The PCB, however, emphasized that the safety and well-being of spectators were their top priorities.
"Well it is sad to know that due to the construction at NSK, spectators would not be allowed to enter the stadium. It is rather unusual that an official Test match is on without fans", former Pak bowler Qasim speaking exclusively over the telephone from Karachi, said.
"Based on my experience, spectators' presence on the ground and their immediate appreciation certainly motivate the players and help players to remain focused on the game. I believe without fans and spectators even TV coverage won’t look interesting".
"Any way for the upcoming prestigious events (ICC Champions Trophy), the Karachi’s fans would bear this loss and watch at home", Qasim, who turned 72 earlier this month, said.
Echoing the similar views, former Bangladeshi skipper, Mohammad Ashraful says, "Definitely, the players would miss their fans at the ground. They will not enjoy playing without the spectators. Not only in cricket, but in other sports also, the players enjoy playing in front of their followers. But as the Test match is already scheduled and decided to play without them, what more can be done ? After all, the players are professionals and learn to play under any situation".
"Our Bangladeshi team had poor performance in the last few Champions Trophies, hope they perform well this time", Ashraful signed off.
There have been instances of cricket matches played without spectators during the Covid period. India vs. England Tests in Chennai (2021): The first two Test matches of the India vs. England Test series were played without spectators at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation in India.
India vs. South Africa Boxing Day Test (2021): The first Test between India and South Africa, starting at Centurion on December 26, was played without spectators due to the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron V4.
