Southgate calls trouble-making fans ‘embarrassment’
After bottles were thrown at the opposition’s fans at the Praca da Liberdade stadium, riot police charged at the trouble-makers.
Mumbai: Manager Gareth Southgate has spoken about the chaos caused by numerous England fans during the Nations League Finals match against the Netherlands, who won the match 3-1 in extra-time.
After bottles were thrown at the opposition’s fans at the Praca da Liberdade stadium, riot police charged at the trouble-makers. Though further violence was avoided, there were also issues between the local police and England fans in areas around the stadium.
Southgate slammed the elements of fans misbehaving.
“I haven’t seen it. I’m aware of it,” said the manager.
“The saddest thing for me is we have thousands upon thousands come and support us brilliantly and have the ability to enjoy themselves without causing offence or causing problems, but we have a group who are an embarrassment,” he adds.
Southgate further stated that “As an Englishman, they aren't supporters of the team, they reflect so poorly on us as a country.”
