The ongoing World Cup has been full of surprises. From the shocking elimination of marquee teams such as Argentina, Germany and Brazil to the fairytale run of the hosts, the extravaganza in Russia has kept the fans of the ‘beautiful game’ on the edge of their seats. A breath-taking climax is in store as the tournament veers into the semi-final stage with all four in the fray - England, Belgium, France and Croatia - being European countries. And only two (England and France) of the four have the experience of lifting the trophy. We spoke to a few celebrities to find who they would put their money on.

Sabir Pasha, assistant coach of defending ISL champions, Chennaiyin FC, is backing England to go all the way. “I believe Gareth Southgate’s team have a bright chance to win the title. They are solid in defence and boast potent attackers. It gives them a great balance. Croatia have a strong midfield, but England have created more chances this tournament,” says Pasha, the former India player.

Pasha predicts an England-Belgium final. “Between France and Belgium, I would say the latter would make it to the final. France have some chinks in their armour. I believe Belgium will capitalise on them,” adds Pasha who picks young French striker Kylian Mbappe as the find of the tournament.

Actor Ashok Kumar would like to see an underdog punching above its weight. “In the film industry, I see myself as an underdog, without any godfather to boost my career. One has to work your way to success with pure talent, sheer grit and perseverance. So it feels nice when an underdog goes on to win. However, I think France have an edge, given their recent form. They were brilliant in the quarterfinal against Uruguay,” he says.

For actor Bharath, his heart says one, but mind says another. “It’s once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for small teams like Croatia. Not many would have expected them to make it to the last four. They came through a thrilling quarterfinal on Saturday. Croatia have a great mix of youth and experience under the leadership of Luka Modric. But my mind says it would be England vs France in the final,” says Bharath.

England have another backer in actor Yashmith. “The tournament has pulled off plenty of surprises. I can’t still digest the fact that Brazil are not in the semis. It’s probably time England proved their credential. It’s been long drought for them,” Yashmith says.
