Cabinet revs up Fifa U-17 jamboree

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chairs a meeting of the high-level ministerial and official delegation in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday to evaluate the progress in preparations for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in which Kochi is one of the hosts.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened a high- level meeting of ministers and officials working for the success of FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Kochi. Eight matches are being held at Kochi Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in October.

Kochi is one of the cities which is organising the FIFA U-17 World Cup along with Mumbai, New Delhi, Goa, Guwahati and Kolkata. Kochi Kaloor Stadium will host two matches each on October 7, 10 and 12 and a match on October 18 and also the quarter final on October 22. The high-level meeting also decided to upgrade the training grounds like Maharaja’s College ground, Panampilly Nagar Sports Academy Ground, Fort Kochi Ground and Parade Ground as prescribed by the FIFA. Chief Minister evaluated the progress achieved in the run-up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup stating that external beautification of the stadium, civil works, safety measures and allied arrangements.

The high-level meeting was attended by sports minister A.C. Moideen, Dr T.M. Thomas Issac, G. Sudhakaran, K.T. Jaleel, sports secretary Dr B. Ashok, sports affairs director Sajjayan Kumar, Ernakulam sub-collector Dr Adheela Abdulla, GCDA chairman C.N. Mohanan, secretary M.C. Joseph and Sports Council president T.P. Dasan.
