Sunil Chhetri to marry ex-India footballer's daughter
Subroto Bhattacharya has been a mentor for Sunil Chhetri when he was at the start of his career as a footballer.
Kolkata: Sunil Chhetri is set to follow Yuvraj Singh’s footsteps as he is going to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend Sonam Bhattacharya. The Indian football team skipper will be marrying former Indian footballer Subroto Bhattacharya’s daughter in February or March next year.
Sonam, who currently runs two star hotels in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area, has a management degree from a Scotland-based university.
Sonam’s father, who was a former Mohun Bagan footballer, has been a mentor to Chhetri as he began his career.
“I have seen Sunil grow as a footballer. I got him to Kolkata Maidan in 2003 and he has improved as a footballer. I can compare him to Xavier Pius of our times,” Subroto Bhattacharya was quoted as saying to Hindustan Times.
“Yes, Sunil came and met us. They have been in a relationship and I think they should be happy for the rest of their lives. He (Chhetri) is a good lad and I like his innocence” Bhattacharya said further.
Chhetri is a part of Ranbir Kapoor-owned Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League, and also captained the Bengaluru FC side which became the first Indian team to reach AFC Cup final this year.
