Swimming: Damini, Sanjay set pool ablaze

Bengaluru: Damini K Gowda and Sanjay CJ set new records on the opening day of the state sub junior and junior aquatic championships held at the Dolphin Aquatics in Mathikere on Wednesday.

The duo shattered the state record with timings better than that of the national mark, but being a state championship the national records remain unchanged.

Sanjay stopped the clock at 8:43.88 seconds to smash Aaron D’souza’s 10-year old state record of 9:01.72 seconds en route to the 800M freestyle gold (Group II). He was also quicker than the national record of 8:50.48 seconds set by Aryan Makhija two years ago.

Meanwhile, Damini clocked 2:21.24 seconds in the 200M butterfly event (Group I) to clinch the yellow metal and better her own record of 2:23.65 seconds from last year. The Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre trainee also eclipsed her national mark of 2:21.53 seconds in the process.

There were three more new state records and it call came in the relay with Dolphin Aquatics taking the top prize and the record in the boys’ Group II 4x200M freestyle (8:38.09 secs) and Group III 4x50M freestyle (1:57.15 secs) events.

BAC took the top medal and the state record in the girls’ Group II 4x200M FS event with a time of 9:35.24 seconds.
