Gold Coast: It was a field day for Indians at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF World Tour Platinum Australia Open on Tuesday, as Sanil Shetty and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran completed major upsets against players ranked much higher than them in the round of 32 stage.
The 28-year-old Sanil, who faced world number 13 Jang Woojin of South Korea, won in six games, with a margin of 11-9, 3-11, 12-10, 11-3, 6-11, 11-8. This was a massive victory for Sanil, who is ranked at a lowly 200 on ITTF’s men’s singles charts.
Meanwhile, world number 102 Sathiyan Gnanasekaran overcame the challenge of world number 14 Chen Chien-An of the Chinese Taipei, also in six games, by a scoreline of 11-6, 4-11, 1-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9.
These massive victories put the two Indians in the pre-quarterfinals stage of the tournament.
