Chess Tournament: Matta Vinay Kumar is champion
Sreeshwan secures the runner-up position in the Amanthran Chess event.
Matta Vinay Kumar of Andhra Bank dashed M. Sreeshwan’s dreams after being tied at seven points as the former won the 7th Amanthran Rapid & Blitz Prize Money Chess Tournament played in Hyderabad. Vinay defeated Sreeshwan in a tie-breaker round which is also known as Bucholz system in chess. As a result, Sreeshwan settled for the runner-up position. J. Ramakrishna, Amithpal Singh, Karthik Kumar Pradeep, Duvvala Suresh, K. Ravi Kumar were the other players who followed the winner and runner with 6.5 points. Meanwhile, Ramakrishna who stood as the sole leader after the fifth round, slipped down the ladder and settled for the third spot.
In earlier rounds, Ramakrishna defeated J. Subramanyam (4) in 42 moves to take the lead in the second board. The eventual winner took the best out of nothing as he was composed throughout the match which put his opponent under pressure. In another encounter, Amithpal Singh (4.5) drew with K. Ramu (4.5) as both the players were gritty enough and prolonged their smart moves to 58 as the match ended in a stalemate. Meanwhile, S. Vikramjith who stood second best in the recently concluded 1st Tetrasoft Fide Rating Chess tournament, lost in the fifth round against Duvvala Suresh.
In another encounter, Sreeshwan (4.5) defeated Kalyan Sreenivas (3.5). But, Sreshwan came all guns blazing as he vehemently put his rival in trouble with his smart moves. In the earlier rounds, Vinay and Sreeshwan were lagging behind with 4.5 points each but later revved up to top the list.
