Junior Athletics Championships: S Yugender wins first medal for Telangana
In the boys U-14 long jump, Bihar's Avinash Kumar won the gold with a new national record mark of 6.79 metres.
Hyderabad: S. Yugender won a silver in the Boys Under 12 to 14 triathlon to earn Telangana’s first medal at the 33rd National Junior Athletics Championships that began at the Acharya Nagarjuna University in Manglagiri near Vijayawada on Thursday.
In continunous competitions held in 100 metres, long jump and shot put, Yugender tallied 1,739 points to finish behind Delhi’s Shivang Meena who aggregated 1,779 points. Ajay of Haryana was third with 1,724 points.
Meanwhile, three national records were broken.
In the youth girls U-18 high jump, Haryana’s Rubina Yadav cleared a height of 1.81 metres and broke Swapna Barman’s 1.71m record created in 2013 to win the gold medal. Gayathri Sivakumar of Kerala also equalled Swapna’s record of 1.71m to win the silver. Karnataka’s S. B. Supriya (1.69m) won the bronze.
In the boys U-14 long jump, Bihar’s Avinash Kumar won the gold with a new national record mark of 6.79 metres. Avinash broke Sunaram Murmu’s (Odisha) 2008 record of 6.63m. Sunil (6.40m) from Haryana bagged silver and Odisha’s Lakhan Murmu (6.27m) settled for the bronze medal.
The third national record of the day was registered in the girls U-16 javelin throw as Haryana’s Jyoti hurled the spear to a distance of 41.24 metres. Jyoti broke Tamil Nadu athlete Hemamalini’s 2015 record of 39.69m.
