Kottayam: If the (LDF) government appoints P.T. Usha as the president of state sports council, the UDF will welcome it, said Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.

He was replying to questions from reporters at the Kottayam press club. The Opposition leader was asked why the previous UDF government chose Anju Bobby George, who was already running a sports academy in Karnataka, when there were qualified persons like P.T. Usha in the state who are competent to undertake the responsibility.

The Opposition leader’s comment came in the wake of Ms Anju resigning from her posts as the president of the Kerala Sports Council.

Mr Chennithala came down heavily on the way the LDF government ‘shunted out’ Ms Anju. “It is not proper to insult sports persons like Anju,” Mr Chennithala told reporters.

“The state government and the sports minister shunted out Anju. She took over as the president of the sports council at the request of the previous UDF government. The Sports Council president’s job is not a full time job and a permanent presence in the office is not necessary for the functioning of the post,” he added.

Replying to the criticisms at the Kerala Congress (M) steering committee meeting against the Congress party regarding the failure in certain seats, Mr Chennithala said that the (UDF) will go ahead as a single bundle thereby taking into confidence its constituents.
