Rio Olympics: After Sudha, marathon runner Jaisha tests positive for H1N1
“We suspected H1N1 and took a throat swab besides administering tamiflu,†said Dr Shashidhar Buggi, Director RGUHS.
Bengaluru: India's sporting talents who participated in the Rio Olympics, seem to have returned with quite a few bugs literally. Soon after reports of athlete Sudha Singh testing positive for the H1N1 virus, comes another shocker- marathon runner OP Jaisha too has been diagnosed with the very same infection!
The athlete, along with a surveillance team of the health and family welfare department, reached Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) in the city on Wednesday complaining of fever and dehydration. “We suspected H1N1 and took a throat swab besides administering tamiflu,” said Dr Shashidhar Buggi, Director RGUHS.
On Thursday the test proved positive for H1N1. "We tried to convince her that she had to be admitted to hospital but she felt otherwise and left the place. She might have contracted the virus from fellow athletes at Rio,” Dr Buggi added.
Earlier this week, the 33-year-old Jaisha had triggered a national outrage when she alleged that athletics Federation of India officials did not arrange for water and energy drinks during the race under scorching heat, a claim denied by the AFI.
Jaisha, who fainted at the finish line after completing the race in 89th position, had alleged that there was no water, recovery drinks and refreshment available for her and only once in 8km did she get water. She also said that all the countries had their water and refreshment stations at every 2km but the Indian ones were empty.
