New Delhi: Six-year-old Hashim Mansoor from Jammu and Kashmir won a gold medal at the Asian Youth Karate Championships, held at New Delhi.

Mansoor, who hails from Kashmir’s Bandipora district, won the medal in the sub-junior category (below 25kg) after defeating his Sri Lankan opponent in the final.

"I am very happy to win this medal. I had been practising for this since last one year, it was difficult, but I still won the fight," Hashim told news agency ANI after his achievement.

Mansoor’s coach is delighted with his victory, he said, "It is a huge thing to win this championship as there are not much resources for sports in Kashmir; Hashim faced a lot of hurdles to reach here."

Earlier, eight-year-old Tajamul Islam from Bandipora had become India’s first player to clinch gold in the sub-junior category at the World Kick-boxing Championships.

Mansoor has now qualified for the World Championship, to be held in Europe in September 2017.
