Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association is pinning its hopes on Leander Paes to attract maximum attention when they host a Davis Cup tie after 10 years in the state, at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune from February 3 to 5.
It will be after 43 years that Pune will play host to the prestigious tennis team event. Paes is in the Indian Davis Cup team to take on New Zealand in the Asia/Oceania Group 1 tie. He is currently equal with Nicola Pietrangeli’s 42-12 win/loss record for most doubles wins in the Davis Cup. “It will be chance for Leander to create history. It will go a long way in promoting sport in Pune, state and in the country as a whole,” said Nitin Kareer, chairman of the Davis Cup tie organising committee.
