Calling Anaya a Cricketer’s Son is cruel!
In an age where awareness about gender identity is growing, the continued misgendering of Anaya, daughter of former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar, is insensitive and regressive
Recently, the media referred to Anaya as a “cricketer’s son,” erasing her identity and undermining her journey as a transwoman. This act starkly contrasts with the landmark NALSAR judgment, which unequivocally states that a person’s mental identity supersedes all other forms of identification.
For Anaya, transitioning was not only about embracing her authentic self but also confronting societal prejudice under the public eye. Being the daughter of a celebrated sports figure has meant constant scrutiny, and her choice to transition required immense courage. “To transition is to rebuild yourself entirely while carrying the weight of society’s judgment,” says Arya Rajam, an author and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. .”
Even more disheartening is the silence from socially conscious celebrities, many of whom champion inclusivity and gender rights for causes less personal. At a time when Anaya deserves solidarity, this indifference is deafening. “This is not just about one person—it’s about how society still struggles to accept individuality,” remarks Pooja Srinivasaraja, a mental health expert. “Misgendering isn’t a mistake; it’s an act of violence against someone’s soul.”
Suma Harris, a fashion entrepreneur, emphasizes the challenges trans individuals face. “Anaya’s journey should inspire pride, not ridicule. She’s shown resilience in the most profound ways, and yet society clings to outdated labels. We glorify strength, but fail to support it where it matters most.”
