Moving more and eating better can help you improve your health and keep up with the demands of your busy life, says Dr Praveen Mereddy.

“To maintain good health, I chose to adopt a lifestyle which amalgamates a disciplined routine of regular exercise and a healthy diet.”

Regular Exercise:

Regular exercise has been shown to help boost energy levels and enhance your mood. “I train at the gym with focus on strength training with the help of a trainer every alternate day. It has to be consistent and you must have long-term goals, as rebound fat and weight gain could occur if you stop training,” says the doctor, adding, “Essentially, it’s important to maintain your weight and strengthen your muscles to prevent injury and damage to articular cartilage.”

He continues, “I love doing cardiovascular exercise like badminton, cycling, jogging, brisk walking 2 to 3 days in a week.”

Diet

After trying intermittent fasting ( IF), OMAD (One Meal a day) and calorie restriction diets, Dr Praveen has realised that these are very good for initial weight loss but are not sustainable in the long run, especially to maintain muscle mass. “Sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) is a problem as we grow older. It is very important to focus on nutrition, in the form of a balanced diet with adequate portions of protein, carbohydrate and fat. It is essential to have dietitian or nutritionist’s advice regarding your quality of food intake and calorie restriction and thus, is a very good way to start and maintain muscle mass with good health and fitness.”
