The fascinating story of three generation of the Roshan family will be told as a docu-series to be aired soon on Netflix. This is the first time the family so intimately connected with the Bollywood film industry is offering glimpses into their life. At the heart of this narrative stands the patriarch, the late Roshan Lal Nagrath AKA Roshan Sa’ab. And the tale continues through Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan, who have each uniquely shaped the landscape of Indian entertainment as directors, creators, musicians and actors.
The four-episode series, titled The Roshans, is directed by Shashi Ranjan,
who also co-produces it with Rakesh Roshan. In an exclusive chit chat, he
opened up about the project.
Q: Will four episodes be sufficient to showcase the lives and contributions of the members of this illustrious family?
All the generations will be covered. Roshan Sa’ab bhi honge. It is the story of their struggle. Each episode will be 40 minutes long. I think that will be good enough.
Usually, people don’t know the struggles of such reputed individuals.
Success ki kahaniyan sab ko malum hoti hai. Failures ki kahaniyan nahi malum hoti hai. [Everyone knows the story of their success, but not about their failures].
Q: What kind of failures will be shown?
We will show all aspects of their lives, but the highlight will be their struggles, beginning from the time when Rakesh worked as an assistant and later, when he had no money. His father had died very young and he was the only bread earner of the family. Rajesh was very young, so, Rakesh had to become a man overnight."
Q: What are the other projects you are working on?
I’m doing a web series called Scam Sutra. The characters are involved in a scam, and I find the ‘sutra’. It’s based on a true story which has been fictionalised, but it is not about any politician.
