In the age of social media and ever-changing trends, fashion has continuously redefined itself. The red carpet has emerged as a nostalgic runway, paying homage to the elegance and glamour of bygone eras. Vintage-inspired fashion is making a spectacular comeback, seamlessly weaving the timeless allure of old Hollywood, the luxury of period dramas like Bridgerton, and the rich tapestry of cultural sagas such as Heeramandi. This resurgence is not just a fleeting trend but a celebration of sartorial history that brings a touch of romance, sophistication, and artistic craftsmanship to the modern wardrobe.

Old World Charm

From romancing the craftsmanship in pearls, fine silks, and rich georgette saris to paying an ode to powerful feminine aesthetics with a monochrome colour palette, at recent red carpet events we saw celebrities like Aditi Rao Hydari, Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Radhika Merchant donning graceful gowns, dresses and classic Indian wear to pay homage to the bygone era. Echoing the style of icons like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Marilyn Monroe in luscious satin fabrics, plunging necklines, and cinched waists that accentuate the feminine silhouette, complemented by the classic red lip and soft, cascading waves, the revival of elegance and understated drama has brought back the charm of nostalgic dressing to the mainstream dress circle. Designer Gautam Gupta of the label Asha Gautam says, “From the glamorous old Hollywood gowns seen at Cannes to the intricate accessories, vintage fashion is captivating celebrities and fashion enthusiasts alike. For formal occasions, consider trying out a 1950s A-line calf-length dress in soft pastel tones like blush pink or mint green. Accessorise with sparkling hair clips, barrettes, or jewelled pins, to add a touch of old Hollywood glamour. Accentuate the look with a string of pearls and delicate pearl earrings to maintain the vintage feel. Complete the look with T-strap heels or classic pumps and a beaded clutch, to carry your essentials stylishly. For lovers of Indian wear, a traditional sari with intricate hand embroidery, paired with vintage polka jewellery and a classic bun adorned with fresh flowers exudes timeless beauty. Make it stand out with kohl-rimmed eyes and a deep red lipstick for weddings or festive celebrations.”

Regency Romance

Netflix’s Bridgerton has not only captivated audiences with its riveting storyline but also with its exquisite costume design. This Regency-era drama has sparked a renewed interest in period fashion, translating to a red carpet adorned with empire waistlines, puffed sleeves, and delicate lace detailing. The influence extends beyond gowns; sparkling hair clips, ornate jewellery, and bejewelled shoes reminiscent of the Regency period have become must-have accessories. These pieces add a touch of whimsy and romance, blending the old-world charm with contemporary sophistication. Mayankraj Singh, head designer and founder of the label Atelier Shikaarbagh, says, “I must congratulate the Indian representation on the international red carpets and how the West has welcomed us with open arms. In my opinion, India has yet to get inspiration from Bridgerton and Heeramandi’s style of dressing. We are yet to see soft diaphanous colours and neo-classical linear silhouettes in vogue. It’s time we shift focus from embroideries and focus more on the shapes of the garments as Indian embroideries rule international ateliers. Sleek gowns made in luxurious silk satins with a hint of embroideries have made a comeback along with soft velvet clutches, jewelled hairdos, and statement neckpieces.”

Indian Charm

For fans of Indian royal dressing, richly embroidered fabrics, intricate jewellery, and vibrant colours dominate this trend, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the Indian subcontinent’s sartorial legacy. Red carpet looks inspired by this style feature heavily embellished lehengas, anarkalis, and saris, often paired with statement jewellery like chandelier earrings and maang tikas. Experimentation is the key. Designer Richa Ahluwalia is totally in love with the pre-independence and vintage-era clothes. She believes that the women back then were strong in their thoughts but suppressed from being vocal about their individuality and that reflected in their attire. Layered voluminous bold and bling plugged in gracefully together in one outfit – it’s a perfect time to recreate the magic of that era with the twist of modernity and subtlety. Nail the trend with plunging necklines, glittery fabric in sheeting sequins, and coordinated blingy accessories. For Indian occasions, opt for a vintage jacket with zardozi over a skirt for a new twist. You can belt it to get a more structured look.
