Your expensive smartphone could soon be an antique piece. Thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI)! Tech giants claim that the new AI-laden smart glasses, brain chips and wearables could make smartphones obsolete as early as 2030. Imagine, waking up from bed and reaching out for your smart glasses instead of your smartphone. How about thinking of hot coffee while you are still tossing in bed and the AI brain chip sets the coffee machine ON? And some perfectly toasted golden toasts or your favourite chocolate muffin and cheese omelette. Not to forget the insulin shots and chill pills.
AI has indeed blown the way we view technology with its myriad mind-boggling possibilities. Small wonder that Elon Musk, the world’s richest man (Net Worth over $442.1 billion) is betting big on Neuralink brain chips. Musk claims his Neuralink brain chips will replace smartphones soon. Musk, an astute tech tycoon, shared his views recently on X saying: “In the future, there will be no phones, just Neuralinks.” His company is already running human trials with the AI brain chip technology. Simple explainer: A person implanted with the AI brain chip can move a computer cursor with the mind.
Tryst With AI
Silicon Valley’s tryst with AI technology and the quest for immortality is soon turning into an AR/VR reality. However, the million-dollar question on everybody’s mind is when will you see ‘BHEJA FRAID’ folks on the streets? “If smartphones truly become obsolete, I’d expect a shift towards more immersive and intuitive technologies like wearables or voice-based systems,” says Dr Aman Bhonsle, a psychotherapist-cum-mindset coach. Dr Aman opines that from the behavioural paradigm, moving away from screens will allow people to experience and engage with deeper interpersonal connections.

For the uninitiated, the latest AI glasses claim to do more than just help you see. They guide you through unfamiliar streets with their GPS tools, translate foreign languages in real-time, display an entire guide projected on one’s lens, be your cooking guide and also answer emails at the same time. All this, without you even lifting a finger!

Alexander Manu, a world-renowned futurist and strategic foresight professor in an online interview in 2023 said: “Every couple of years, we have something called ‘the beginning of the end’ where everybody has everything to move to the next level.” “Where are our fax machines? Our landlines?
Boosted Renewal
It's here that giant tech companies like Samsung and Google have mergers that unveil platforms like the Android XR that claim to merge Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Extended reality (XR). The aim is simple- to transfer wearable devices like glasses and headsets into variants of a mobile phone (minus) a screen.

Meta Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Andrew Bosworth's recent post: “The coming year will be the most important one in the history of Reality Labs” has already set the cat among the pigeons in Silicon Valley.
Naman Deshmukh, a Tech Content Creator says, “Google’s AI glasses represent the future of wearable technology by offering real-time features. However, in India, its success will depend on affordability and Internet connectivity.” While glasses or wearables may seem to be very futuristic, they could initially cause adjustment issues. Dr Aman cautions of such initial roadblocks saying, “It’s all about how we adapt and what we prioritize.”
Smarting Around
The new AI gizmos may seem tempting, however, replacing smartphones completely seems a bit far-fetched, especially in India. “AI glasses and similar technologies have the potential to redefine personal computing but completely replacing
mobile phones seems a bit unlikely in the short term,” says Panna Lal Patodia, Managing Director, Patodia Infotech Private Limited.

But as AI smart glasses and brain chips gain prominence and become user-friendly, they certainly could pose a challenge to smartphones and privacy issues.
Dr Aman feels human intelligence and AI systems can never be synonymous. While AI systems thrive on speed, accuracy and ease they lack one thing, emotions. “Humans bring depth, emotion and innovation to the table, the challenge then is to ensure that we don’t lean so much on AI systems to lose touch with the essence of being human.”
Double-Edged Sword
AI is a double-edged sword, cutting through existing realities. It can boost efficiency and reduce cognitive overload, which could impose limitations. Over-reliance on AI could hamper one’s creativity or ability
to try things. Dr Aman says, “We need to learn to work alongside AI without letting it take over our innate abilities like problem-solving and emotional intelligence.”

Human forte lies in creativity, empathy, ethical decision-making and privacy matters. Panna Lal Patodia opines that while AI seems to be the future, there could be vulnerabilities inflicted in terms of overdependence on automation, susceptibility to cyberattacks and reduced critical thinking.
Peaceful Coexistence
India certainly is on its way towards witnessing a boost in AI-based technologies, perhaps AI-powered glasses serve only as the beginning. But the laughter of a child, the sting of heartbreak, the scent of rain on dry earth—these are things no algorithm, no matter how advanced, can truly replicate.

AI-powered glasses and brain chips may make smartphones obsolete but one is yet to get a clear picture of the battery life, cost factor and most importantly social acceptance. The relationship between AI and Human intelligence is indeed fascinating and complex. Till then one can stick to ‘joysticks’, ‘telepathy’ and ‘puck’ knows what else!
