Apple is planning to bring out its in-house modem to market and this could pave the way for slimmer iPhones, cellular-connected Macs, and headsets.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the in-house modem could debut next year and will replace the components from long-term partner Qualcomm.
A modem is a critical component of a mobile phone, which lets the device connect to cell towers to make calls and also link up with the internet.
Apple designed its own modem, code-named Sinope, and it will be tightly integrated with other in-house components, requiring less space and less battery power.
Apple’s 5G modem will debut with the iPhone SE 4, which is expected to be launched in early 2025. Rumours suggest that the company will be using the in-house modem in the iPhone 17 Air, set to be launched in September 2025 along with the iPhone 17 series lineup.
The modem will help Apple to create a smartphone (iPhone 17 Air) 2mm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro, and also in the future, it will allow for new designs, which include foldable devices, reported Bloomberg.
Apple is also exploring the idea of bringing cellular connectivity to Macs, but it is unlikely to arrive in 2025 but can be expected in 2026, when it brings out the second-generation modem. Apart from Mac, the tech giant is planning to bring cellular connectivity to handsets, which includes the Vision Pro.
The company is also planning to use its modem in lower-end iPads in 2025.
Apple looks to bring a second-generation modem dubbed “Ganymede” in 2026, and it is expected to be featured in the iPhone 18 series lineup and iPads. In 2027, Apple plans to roll out a third modem, code-named Prometheus, which the tech giant hopes to top Qualcomm in performance.
