Bluesky, a social media platform, is now backing a new photo-sharing app called Flashes. Flashes is powered by the AT Protocol technology.
According to a report by TechCrunch, Flashes is based on Berlin developer Sebastian Vogelsang’s earlier app called Skeets, and he plans to launch Flashes to the public “in a matter of weeks,” with a Testflight beta arriving ahead of that.
The developer told TechCrunch that Flashes is not meant to be an Instagram clone and will not offer the same features.
Similar to Bluesky, Flashes will support photo posts of up to four images and videos of up to one minute. The posts uploaded to Flashes will appear on Bluesky and will also support Bluesky’s direct messages.
iPhone users can test the app before its launch by applying for TestFlight access through Bluesky’s official website. However, there is no information on when it will be available for Android users.
Flashes, like Skeets, will reportedly be free to use with certain subscription-based features. Additionally, Vogelsang is planning to launch a video-only app called Blue Screen.
With the growing demand for decentralized platforms, Bluesky’s popularity is on the rise. Following the US Presidential elections, the social media platform experienced a surge in users from its rival, X. Currently, Bluesky boasts 27 million users, and this number is anticipated to continue increasing.
The iPhone users can explore Flashes by applying for TestFlight access through Bluesky’s official website to test the app before its launch. Whereas for Android users, there is no word on when it will be available.
