Edimax N300 review: a handy WiFi range extender
The N300 WiFi extender is a single band ranger extender with support for the 2.4Ghz wireless frequency.
Edimax, which is known for offering affordable networking devices such as wireless routers to range extenders, network switches and network cameras has launched its N300 Smart Wi-Fi, model number EW-7438RPn Air for the Indian market.
The N300 WiFi extender is a single band ranger extender with support for the 2.4Ghz wireless frequency. It offers support for 802.11n wireless networking standard. It also has WPS support and has two internal antennas. Users can also download the EdiRange app for Android and iOS which allows them to remote control this device. Unfortunately there is no app available for Windows Phone.
Setting up the device is easy, if you don't have very good router, the wireless coverage can get rather weak in rooms like the kitchen or the medium balcony which are far away from it. Different ways for setting it up are mentioned in the user manual. However the easiest way is to use the WPS feature on your router and the range extender.
The only flaw we noticed is that the N300 requires a restart every time its configuration is altered. This may be a little frustrating while setting it up. The LED on the device lights up depending upon the status of the connection.
If the red light is always on, it means the device is disconnected; if the light flashes red, the device is starting up. When the N300 is successfully connected to the wireless network, the light turns green. When the light turns blue, it means that the Edimax N300 has good signal strength to work with. The Smart Wi-Fi Extender also offers Parental Control features if controlled through the app.
Overall the Edimax N300 Smart Wi-Fi Extender is decent performer at a reasonable price. If you don't need to extend the coverage of a dual-band wireless network and you don't want any special features from a range extender, the this is the device you are looking for.
