Uber will report second-quarter financials to investors this week, which will offer fresh insight on whether the company can get profitable any time soon.

Cab-hailing platform Uber is reportedly working on a way that allows users to book Uber cabs without the use of its app. In other words, if things work out as planned then users will be able to book Uber apps simply through the use of a call or text message. The company is also considering the option of adding social media platforms or other chat options such as WhatsApp as a way to book Uber cabs.

“In India and in other emerging markets, the application is not the only way to get an Uber, there are other ways in which we communicate in India — we call, we SMS, we WhatsApp,” Uber’s head of engineering Apurva Dalal was reported to be saying.

"We are looking at all these areas — be it people who don't want to download the app, who want to download the app but it has to be very light for them, people who are in poor network areas, and channels outside the app itself be it SMSs, chats, social media, etc," said Dalal.

Meanwhile, Ola has already begun its ‘offline feature’ on its platform wherein users are able to book Ola cabs without the help of an Internet connection.
