Facebook to ask for your identity depending on your name'
You better change your online identity if you share your name with some infamous' ones.
Well, if unfortunately, you share your name with one of the ‘infamous’ ones out there, you are likely to see more trouble than fame. Such was the case where a woman from Bristol, Britain, was asked for her identity just because she has ISIS in her name.
Facebook, along with other social and tech giants, are working hard to get rid of terrorism from their websites and services. Recently, they have been taking down many posts and accounts that are related to any terrorist group or promoter. In this move, Facebook stumbled on Isis Thomas, who incidentally shares her name with the terrorist group ISIS. Facebook has sent her an email asking to change her name after logging in and also asked her to prove her name using documents.
Isis is now allowed, did not comply with policy:
According to a recent media report, Facebook asked Isis Thomas to change her name, but she thought that the issue could be with her last name. ‘I was on Facebook as Isis Worcester, because when I first signed up years ago I didn't use my real name, which is Isis Thomas, because of where I worked at the time. ‘I thought it was about the surname, so I just changed it to Isis Thomas. But that didn't work and I realised they had a problem with me being called Isis,’ she said.
Facebook sent her a message that the name Isis is not allowed according to the new policy and asked her for proof of identity. After sending the proof, she still thinks that satisfying the social giant would take a lot more than expected.
The issue is not only online, but also offline. Some small and big businesses were also affected because of their name. For example, a US-based pharma company ‘ISIS Pharmaceuticals changed its name to Ionis and another bookstore in US, was reportedly valdalised.
