Relaxing the 140-character limit, which was set due to mobile phone text messaging constraints in place when Twitter launched in 2006, is expected to encourage more use and sharing of pictures, videos and links.

Virtual reality and 360-degree are two of the key buzzwords in the social media domain and numerous social platforms including Facebook and Youtube have introduced support for 360-degree videos.

Following their footsteps, micro-blogging site Twitter is also going to initiate the feature by virtue of a partnership with NBA, and Samsung, according to a report by The Verge.

The report said that Twitter cards would link out videos shot with 360-degree cameras, allowing users to click and drag around the scene. All the videos were filmed on a Samsung Gear 360 camera will be uploaded on the official Twitter page of NBA.

While the report did not delve into details about the videos, Twitter has promised some exclusive content. Introducing support of 360-degree videos is a positive step by the company and comes at a right time, considering the rising popularity of VR headsets and new content. However, Facebook is still ahead of the race due to its perfect combination of live streaming, VR, and 360-degree video.

Moreover, the fact that you won’t be able to view 360-degree videos directly on the website is unfortunate; users have to leave Twitter’s app or website to view the videos. But the new deal is surely an impetus to bring more 360-degree content on Twitter’s site.
