Hyderabad: The policemen on the road will now be able to trace out missing children through ‘Facial Recognition System,’ FRS, which is a technology that has been integrated into the TSCOP mobile app.

“The pictures of children who go missing will be uploaded in the FRS and whenever the police come across these children wandering on streets, or during raids, they will click a picture of the child and upload it on FRS. The system will show matches and depending upon the evidence gathered, they will be handed over to their parents,” said DGP Telangana, M. Mahender Reddy. The FRS is actually a database where digital photographs of people with a criminal record are stored.

As many as 1 lakh photographs are stored on FRS who have been involved in two or more cases across the country. “It is usually used to aid investigation officials in identifying the criminals involved in the case,” he said.

Whenever there is any offence, the police will collect photographs from the CCTV cameras present in the vicinity and compare it with their data base. “With the help of mobile phones, the police can identify the suspects and fetch their details. The field-level police officials have been briefed to not depend on FRS totally. They should also check other evidences, if any, and do a background check. Only then can should they come to a conclusion,” the official said.

He said that the FRS systems compares the suspects with facial features and calculates the distance between different organs on the face.
