Maserati will go electric before 2020
The electric car will not be Tesla's rival but a more focused coupe
With the automotive space booming in the electric car segment, Italian carmakers are still in the backdrop when it comes to manufacturing electric cars. Although there is still the LaFerrari Hybrid but then the space is speculated to change in the next few years.
Ferrari’s sibling Maserati has been reported to be planning on an electric vehicle, thus entering itself into the premium electric car segment. But surprisingly, it won’t be a Tesla rival.
Engineering boss from Maserati Roberto Fedeli has stated the probability of getting the Maserati EV ready before 2020 at the Paris Auto show. The EV is being touted to be very different from other electric cars in its segment. The time factor is a major stat because by the time Maserati is ready with its premium EV, there will already be filled with examples from BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Lexus, Infiniti, and Volvo, along with Tesla.
One of the major challenges that Maserati is inevitably bound to face is to produce an electric machine which is “electrifying” to drive. It would have to be light and full of character. A 2020 goal for Maserati is realistic but it still has to wait for battery technology to catch up to its plans.
