Facebook now has more than 5 million active advertisers on its platform, up from 4 million in September last year and 2 million in February 2015, the company announced on Monday.

The Facebook-owned photo-sharing app Instagram reached more than 1 million monthly active advertisers in late March this year.

In a blogpost, Facebook revealed the number of businesses with mobile pages has reached 65 million, and 8 million businesses now have profile on Instagram.

Majority of the Facebook advertisers come from small and medium sized businesses, and outside US.

The company is aiming for more advertisers as it tries to become the centre of online commerce.

“With more than 5 million active advertisers on Facebook, we need to provide solutions for businesses so customers can learn more about their products, visit websites, download an app, or even send messages,” Facebook wrote on the blogpost.

The company has also created small business councils in the US, India, Brazil and Germany —and is planning to announce councils in more countries later this year.
