Apple may introduce under-the-display fingerprint scanner this year
Apple may be a lot closer than Samsung to introduce this new technology to the smartphone market.
Samsung has been working hard on shifting the fingerprint scanner under the touch panel which will make it possible for users to unlock their devices by tapping the display.
According to a new report, Apple may be a lot closer than Samsung to introduce this new technology to the smartphone market.
It has turned out that Samsung’s fingerprint sensor integrated into the display is now causing some screen issues on the existing prototypes. One of the major issues is increased brightness in areas under which the scanner has been installed.
Because of this, Samsung is believed to be investigating the problem. It has decided to hold this feature back a little longer.
This means, the Galaxy Note 8 which has been projected to launch this year will not be getting the new fingerprint scanner, but rather the same position which was used on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ with the conventional sensor placed on the back of the phone.
It is most likely that Samsung is now planning to debut the fingerprint sensor embedded into the display in the first quarter of 2018, where the South Korean manufacturer is planning to take the wraps of the new-generation S model. This means the Galaxy S9 will be the first smartphone to incorporate the under-display fingerprint scanner.
Apple on the other hand is also developing a similar technology, and in this case, the work seems to be advancing at a much better pace. Cupertino is projected to introduce the new fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 8, which could see daylight in September before it hits the market in October.
