Google introduces 180-degree videos to YouTube
The latest video format makes it easier and affordable for video makers to shoot immersive content.
The demand for immersive video content has emerged to unexpected levels. YouTube has thousands of 360-degree videos to offer its viewers. However, 360-degree videos are expensive to make and are time-consuming as well. Keeping in mind the issue, Google has rolled out a new 180-degree video format for YouTube.
Called the VR180, it has been developed in collaboration between Google’s daydream VR division and YouTube. These videos don’t stretch around like the 360-degree videos but extend to 180 degrees around the viewer. In simple words, it will be immersive if you watch them in one direction. In essence, it will be similar to a curved TV that has been stuck on the user's face.
Videographers will be able to shoot with specific cameras from Yi, Lenovo and LG. These cameras will shoot like any other camera and will make it easier to edit videos with standard video editors like Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. Google also says that interested people will be able to loan such cameras from Google Spaces before they are widely available in the market.
VR180 format will be compatible with Google Cardboard viewers, Google Daydream View headset and PlayStation VR headset. These videos will appear as normal videos on a flat-plane when you are not using a VR headset.
