Sony to refund water-resistant Xperia smartphone owners

There’s a raging trend of smartphones adopting a water resistant body, which makes sense as a ‘smart’ device should be able to withstand the atrocities of Mother Nature. Sony has been doing these for a long time and has mastered the idea of making water resistant smartphones. However, Xperia customers in the US have been complaining of their ‘supposedly water resistant’ smartphones to die with normal exposure to water.

The affected users filed for damages to the promise that Sony made regarding the protection of its phones from the water. The preliminary settlement in class action lawsuit will offer a 50 percent refund of the retail price to US customers who bought a water-resistant Sony Xperia device and had to file water damage claims. If the phone is still under warranty, then Sony will even extend that to another year.

The Xperriawaterproofsettlement blog lists 24 Xperia devices that fall under the benefits. However, the refund would only apply to those handsets that have been damaged severely due to the water proofing failure and have a record of the conversation with the service centre are entitled to get the refund.

It is good to see that manufacturers these days have been paying attention to their after-sales service, the finest example being Samsung’s global recall of the defective Note 7 smartphone.
