Social media addiction is bigger than you think.
Social networking is massively addictive, and you should admit it. Everyone is on Facebook today—sharing news and videos, posting information about their personal lives and chatting. We know of a few too many people around us who begin and end their daily lives with Facebook, leave alone the amount of time they spend each day on it. From reading just basic posts to peeping into someone’s personal life, we should admit that we all do it each day, knowingly or unknowingly. If you are in the same category of being a Facebook addict, do you really know how much of time you ‘waste’ each day glued to that smartphone or tablet?
If you are a social media addict, and probably getting dragged deeper into the online world, it is not actually your fault. Social network companies just want you to do that. Reason—revenue, at the cost of your time and probably, health too! Every social network networking firm out there, be it Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat or Tumblr, are working hard each day to enrich their content showcase to make you addicted to their platform so that you cannot resist them. And Facebook is one of the top most platforms where people are addicted.
The Cornell University conducted a survey late last year which shows the gruesome fact that explains a few factors why we can and cannot quit Facebook. The research highlights a study from the website called 99 Days Of Freedom which encourages people to stop using Facebook for 99 days. The study is interesting since it reveals the difficulty of people quitting Facebook because of addiction. While some passed, many failed within just a few days.
The main trick that social networking sites use is ‘notifications’ and that too with ‘numbers’. This reveals information on who followed you, commented or tagged you, which makes you more inquisitive on what is happening around the network and why were you mentioned. And once you are in the app, you read on and go ahead investigating more stuff.
So if you feel that you are probably one of those who cannot resist the social networking platform, especially Facebook, here are a few simple tests. Do note: this test is just for your basic information, which could reveal a few statistics about your addiction to Facebook.
