Mario decides to then team up with Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Luigi in the hope of bringing order to the chaos that has ensued.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a turn based strategy RPG that feels heavily inspired from the rebooted XCOM series. The premise of the story is as silly as you can imagine. A Mario fan is in the middle of making a helmet that can fuse any two objects together. Rabbids use their time washing machine to enter her lab and start wrecking the place. One thing leads to another and they find themselves in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario decides to then team up with Rabbid Peach and Rabbid Luigi in the hope of bringing order to the chaos that has ensued.

Just like XCOM, there are objects everywhere for you to hide behind. You can take half or full cover that will block 50 per cent and 100 per cent damage respectively until it is destroyed. Mario + Rabbids revolves around flanking, as dealing or taking damage has a more definitive percentage. You must move around the map and get in better positions to take your shot. For the first few hours the game appears to be extremely basic. But as you progress through the story, more gameplay opportunities are available to you, including a skill tree, while the difficulty ramps up. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is deceptively simplistic and its fresh take on the XCOM formula leads to engaging combat encounters. While it is filled with some severe difficulty spikes and combat becomes too repetitive, this is one of the first games you need to consider upon purchasing a Nintendo Switch.
